Population genetic analysis and compilation of a genetic profile of Kabardian horse breed
Project
Project code: keine Angabe
Contract period: 01.03.2013
- 28.02.2015
Purpose of research: Applied research
The Kabardian horse is an old breed developed in tradition and requirements of Northern Caucasia. It is well known for strength, stamina, and endurance in distance riding. After the political changes in the Soviet Union, this breed had a collapse. But now it enjoys a revival as a horse with character for working and leisure time as well as cultural heritage. At present, modern breeding strategies and molecular genetic analysis can help to prevent a decline, to consolidate and to improve this population. The project comprises three parts: - microsatellite and mtDNA analysis for paternity estimation, subdivision into lines, monitoring of diversity and comparison with other breeds, - genome-wide screening with an Equine SNP Chip and sequencing of candidate genes in genetically diverse horses to find QTL or performance associated mutations, - development of a modern breeding concept including paternity and performance testing, optimal selection for conservation as special breed and maintaining the genetic diversity as well as creation of an electronic database for phenotypic data and genetic markers. This project shall help to establish an institute for genetic research at the State University of Kabardino-Balkaria and to give scientific support for the breeding work in the future.
