Ethylformiate fumigation of fruits and vegetables
Project
Project code: JKI-ÖPV-08-1299
Contract period: 01.01.2013
- 31.12.2015
Purpose of research: Applied research
In contrast to methyl bromide, ethyl formiate does not remain as a stable residue in fumigated fruit and vegetables and is transformed into harmless compounds by sunlight after its release into the ambient atmosphere. Different kinds of kiwis and apples are to be fumigated with ethyl formiate at concentrations suitable to control pests, and investigated for residues and the quality of the products during the subsequent storage.
The primary focus is Safe Food Production but we are sure the project will have benefits in the Environment area, especially climate change (restoration of the ozone layer has already had bigger climate benefits than Kyoto Protocol targets for 2008-12).
There is a big interest to move towards methyl bromide alternatives to reduce the impact on the environment. Additionally, the project will make a contribution to the introduction of new and innovative disinfestation technologies in the international markets.
