Determination of furan fatty acids and conjugated linoleic acids in food

Conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) isomers are C18 diene fatty acids with different conjugated double bond configurations. The objective of this study is the development of a method (HPLC and GC/MS) for the direct analysis of the CLAs in their free fatty acid form and in their methyl esters (CLAMEs). The commercial reference CLA-isomers c9,c11-, c9,t11-, t9,t11- and t10,c12-octadecadienoic acids are separated and identified. Furan fatty acid (FFA) can be obtained via the autoxidation or by the reaction of singlet oxygen with conjugated dienes of a CLA. The separation and analysis of furan fatty acids and other minor component fatty acids present at very low concentrations in complex sample matrices (food-products). The objective of this study is the development of a method (HPLC, GC/FID, GC-FT/IR and GC/MS) to identify oxidation products (FFA) of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). The commercial reference FFA 9,12-Epoxy-9,11- and 10,13-Epoxy-10,12-octadecadienoic acids are separated and identified. A procedure for identification and determination of furan fatty acids (FFAs) and of conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs), including RP-HPLC/DAD and Ag+-HPLC/DAD methods, were established. The detection of FFAs and CLAs in lower ng levels are possible by Ag+-HPLC methods.
