Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment
International trade can contribute to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. This research project focuses on the role of agricultural trade to foster sustainable developments. Trade can have an impact on local and global agricultural markets and their developments. Trade policies and their implementations play a central role in this. In order to reach the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations (SDGs), agricultural trade policies must be formulated in a way that they support market access, ensure an adequate standard of living for farmers, reduce poverty especially in rural areas, and ensure sustainable agricultural production practices. The aim of the project is to identify, quantify and analyse the complex links between trade and sustainability using an evidence based, integrated, and participatory approach. For this, a consortium of 13 international partners will analyse relationships between trade and sustainable developments using different methods and perspectives. Furthermore, the consortium will provide policy recommendations to foster positive links between international trade and sustainable development. Therefore, different options to implement trade policy measures will be analysed and evaluated. The focus lies on policies concerned with agriculture, energy, climate, environment and diets at national, European, and global level. Our analysis at the Thünen-Institute will focus on national agricultural markets within the European Union and the impact of policies and strategies which foster sustainability on these markets. Main strategies and policies are the SDGs, the Green Deal, the Farm-to-Fork Strategy, and the Common Agricultural Policy of the EU (CAP).
