Modelling of forest development and timber harvesting potential in Germany based on the national forest inventory
Project
Project code: BFH-VII-02-2.10
Contract period: 28.02.2002
- 30.10.2004
Purpose of research: Applied research
Basing of the data of the first and second national forest inventory as well as mathematical models and a computational program, which are developed for the Federal Ministry of Consumer Protection, Food and Agriculture, is modelled the forest development and timber harvesting potential. Also the possible change of wide forest conditions (in particular regarding timber stock and age structure of the forests) with different use scenarios is calculated. The experiences and algorithms of the first modelling of timber harvesting potential on the base of the first national forest inventory are considered too. For the description of growth an competition-independent single tree model is used, which appropriately considers the data situation from the inventory. The growth functions are developed from the repetition measurements of identical sample trees of the national forest inventories from the years 1987 and 2002. Possible growth changes due to a climatic change are not regarded. The results of the modellings for the samples are forecasted for the federal area with algorithms and programs developed at the BFH and represented with the same programs used for the national forest inventory.
