"Support for farm-specific optimization measures as well as development and testing of indicators and methods for early detection of tail biting.
Due to the multifactorial causes of tail biting, conventional pens on five experimental farms were extensively optimized into so-called ComfortPlus pens, e.g. via space allowance, functional areas incl. microclimate, organic enrichment material and stable groups. The different implementations are intended to provide support and orientation for farm-specific optimizations to reduce tail damage. However, the optimizations alone do not reliably allow to keep undocked pigs. The associated recording of performance data and workload provide pig farmers with additional support and orientation for farm-specific optimizations. In addition to the prevention of tail biting using optimized housing and management conditions, innovative methods for the early detection of tail biting were developed and tested within the framework of the project."
