As a signatory to the Rio Convention of 1992, Germany is committed to achieving its goals. The Convention underscores the need to gain an understanding of ecosystem performance and diversity, so that we can use this knowledge to develop strategies for the conservation and sustainable use of diversity. In order to find answers to these mission-critical questions, we need a broad range of concepts and scientific paradigms, as well as extensive interdisciplinary research. Our 'Biodiversity and global change' (BIOLOG) program is enabling us to work toward the goals of the Rio Convention. By focusing on the following four central research levels, the program aims to gain a better understanding of the dynamics of biodiversity in ecosystems: 1. Which species inhabit specific ecosystems? This research involves taking a census of the biodiversity of specific ecosystems, as this information is key to identifying and assessing threats to individual species. 2. What kinds of interdependencies and relationships exist between the various species in a specific ecosystem? 3. To what extent are ecosystems subject to change? Which factors contribute to ecosystem stability and instability? 4. How can ecosystems be used sustainably?
