Project code: MRI-MBT-08-123 1040 Trans EVO
Contract period: 01.04.2020 - 31.07.2022
Purpose of research: Experimental development
Keywords: nutrition, lactic acid bacteria, gut health, host genotype

FUT2 encodes an α1,2-fucosyltransferase responsible for the expression of ABO histo-blood group antigens on mucosal surfaces and in bodily secretions. Individuals bearing at least one functional allele are known as “secretors”, whereas those homozygous for loss-of-function mutations display a “non-secretor” phenotype. Several mutations leading to the non-secretor phenotype exist in human populations and display evidence of being maintained by strong selective pressure. These observations indicate the existence of strong trade-offs, and that the host genotype in addition to nutrition plays an important role of determining the biodiversity of the gut microbiota. Intestinal lactic acid bacteria and Bifidobacteria in the human gut are influenced by the host diet. They have been intensely investigated for their utilization as human probiotics to improve immune function or to stabilize the gut microbiota. However, as these bacteria are also influenced by the FUT2 genotype, the study aims to determine the interactions of nutrition, FUT2 genotype and the diversity of gut bifido- and lactic acid bacteria on gut health.
