Project code: REFORDAT-79, AZ II-1-F 41-2010.08
Contract period: 08.03.2010 - 30.04.2012
Budget: 88,015 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

Scientific evidence shows that a diet rich in fruit and vegetables (F&V) is one of the essentials for lowering the risks of chronic diseases including obesity. Nevertheless, children and adolescents in particular fail to meet public health guidelines with regard to an adequate intake of these food items. The availability of and the access to fruits and vegetable are considered to be crucial factors to positively influence intake of those products. Given this background in March 2010 the school fruit scheme initiated and co-financed by the EU will be implemented in North-Rhine Westphalia. It is the objective of this research project to analyse and evaluate the implementation of this program and derive relevant recommendation. To achieve this objective, the project will not only analyse the impact of the fruit scheme program on the dietary behaviour of children but will also identify success factors and impediments in the areas of organisation and logistics as well as with respect to educational orientation and support of those programs.
