Project code: 81108023
Contract period: 01.11.2008 - 31.05.2011
Budget: 60,000 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

Goal: To study and improve the productivity of farmer-developed minimum tillage systems for potato on paddy rice soils, and to evaluate its potential for out-scaling to South East Asia. Purpose: The minimum tillage system for potato on paddy rice soils has great potential for producing an additional crop within a relatively short period of time, thereby optimizing use of available resources. However, with the exception of Chinese agricultural literature, this system has not been described and analyzed. Furthermore, several constraints including the amount of straw required limit the system‘s productivity and adaptability. Tackling these contraints for example, by reducing the amount of straw needed for potato production would decrease the system‘s production costs, make it less dependent on input, and enhance its flexibility, thereby enabling it to be applied to more land.
