Methicillin resistant and enterotoxic S. aureus in raw milk from dairy cows

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus has recently been characterized by EFSA as a zoonotic pathogen. Enterotoxins produced by some strains of S. aureus cause food poisoning in humans.The objective of the study is to determine the prevalence of Methicillin-resistant and enterotoxic S. aureus in raw milk. Factors associated with the prevalence of these S. aureus strains in bulk tank milk will be elucidated. Using molecular methods, S. aureus strains isolated from raw milk shall be compared to those recently isolated from pigs and strains isolated from foods involved in human infections or human isolates of MRSA. Overall the results of the study will allow to estimate the importance of dairy cows as a reservoir für Methicillin resistant or enterotoxic S. aureus.
