Institute for Landscape Biogeochemistry (ZALF-LBG)

Institution

Description

At the institute of Landscape biogeochemistry we characterize and quantify biogeochemical transformations across the landscape. We focus primarily on the fluxes and cycles of carbon and nitrogen as well as their interaction with the water cycle. In addition, we characterise interactions between biodiversity, physiology and the activities of key organisms and the material and energy flows in anthropogenic landscapes. Understanding the processes that drive and regulate biogeochemical cycles and biotic interactions at different scales is of central importance to our work. Only with this understanding can we assess and predict shifts in the function of landscapes that are undergoing fundamental changes in the prevailing environmental conditions (climate, land use).
