Institute for Breeding Research on Agricultural Crops (JKI-ZL)

Institution

Description

The Institute is charged with investigating plant genetic resources for food and agriculture with regard to their genetic potentials for adapting the genomes of crop plants to future requirements. Our work, which can be coined with the term “Genetic Enhancement”, is directed to broadening the genetic bases of existing crops in respect of agronomically important plant traits. Another focus of our research is on alternative or novel crop plants which offer interesting perspectives for Germany's agriculture yet require further genetic adaptation to agronomic requirements. Enriching genetic diversity and broadening the spectra of crop species provide the prerequisites for maintaining agro biodiversity, the latter of which is essential for versatility as well as sustainability in agricultural production. The spectra of crop species considered by the institute currently comprises potato, rye, barley, triticale, oat, teff, ryegrasses, narrow-leafed lupin, and a variety of oil plants. In addition, maize has been considered in the frame of a large-scale coexistence field trial during the past years. Research activities of the institute are embedded in the Research Plan of our ministry. With its applied breeding research on plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, the Experimental Station takes a mediating position between fundamental research and commercial plant breeding.
