Collaborative project: On-farm self-monitoring of animal welfare: feasibility, setting of an assessment framework and technical electronic implementation. Subproject 2

Project

Project code: 2817901015, FLI-ITT-08-Ce-0057
Contract period: 01.11.2016 - 31.10.2019
Budget: 212,824 Euro
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment

On-farm self-assessments are legally required since 2014. The guidelines "Animal Welfare Indicators: Practical Guide – Cattle/Pigs/Poultry" which enable livestock farmers to systematically assess animal welfare on their farms, were investigated regarding their feasibility and reliability, and amended based on the results. Training courses on the contents of the guide-lines were developed to allow a reliable assessment of the animal welfare indicators. Online training courses and tests are freely available in the internet. The additionally developed Excel® application facilitates data collection and analysis and is also available free of charge. Involving numerous experts, reference values were elaborated in a multi-stage process by means of a Delphi survey, literature review and expert panels. Livestock farmers can compare their results with target and alarm values and thereby determine, if action to improve animal welfare on their farm is necessary.
