Preventive handling of faba bean and pea crops for avoidance of pathogens and securing yield

Project

Project code: JKI-EP-08-2307, 2815EPS070
Contract period: 01.04.2017 - 31.12.2017
Purpose of research: Applied research

This is an additional proposal to change Projects 120E012 and 15EPS023 coordinated by Universität Kassel. In conjunction with JKI Braunschweig, Institute for Epidemiology and Pathogen Diagnostics and Thünen Institut for Organic Farming (TI-OL) in Trenthorst, JKI will coordinate and execute a monitoring at JKI field station Sickte and at TI-OL field station Trenthorst.

Aim 1: Optimisation of a novel aeral photograph-based diagnostic tool in North-Hessia, Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein for detection of viruses, estimation of affected acrage and yield parameters (University Kassel-Witzenhausen, JKI-BS, TI-OL-Trenthost.). Aim 2: Monitoring of vector activity, virus load of vectors and virus infection of plants at three different model regions of organic cropping (North Hessia, University of Kassel-Witzenhause, Neu-Eichenberg), Lower Saxony (JKI-BS-Sickte) and Schleswig-Holstein (TI-OL, Trenthorst). Aim 3: At University Kasse-Witzenhausen, the aerial early diagnostic tool will be optimised for faba beans. Therefore, non-infected, single infected plants with PEMV and PNYDV, respectively and mixed infected plants (PEMV and PNYDV) will be investigated with this tool to provide an early alert system for applied farming. This tool will also be applied to the field trials in JKI-BS for green peas and TI-OL for protein peas. To summarise, aims 1 to 3 will close the knowledge gap of the epidemiology of virus infection and develop novel tools for early diagnostic. Taken together with a status-quo analyisis, specific advice and guidlines will be produced for prevention of infections and yield loss in applied farming.
