Purpose of research: Applied research

There is a worldwide need for increasing agricultural production. However, this should not be on cost of the environment, biodiversity or soil health. Within this respect, there is a need to improve sustainability in farming systems particularly through soil care and soil improvement, but not at the expense of productivity. Within a larger project, one focus will be on plant-parasitic nematodes as parameter for soil health and sustainability. Main focus will be on changes in nematode dynamics affected by improved conservation tillage. This will be developed from improved ways of integrating subsidiary crops (SC) as living or dead mulches or cover crops with the main crops in rotations so as to simultaneously improve crop nutrition, health, and productivity. The research will be based on 4 coordinated field experiments in different climatic regions. These experiments will all be assessed for economic and ecological impact including plant-parasitic nematode dynamics. The results of the project will be of use for and improve sustainability in organic, and conventional farming systems.
