Development of a method for the evaluation of genetic ressources of the genus Malus for resistance to fungal disease Marssonina coronaria in European fruit production
Project
Project code: JKI-ZGO-08-4179
Contract period: 01.01.2015
- 31.12.2017
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: apple, Marssonina leafspot, resistance test, sustainable fruit production
The aim of the project is the development of a method for identification of resistant apple cultivars against a recently appeared fungal disease for future apple breeding purpose. The pathogen is the fungus Marssonina coronaria, the causative agent of apple blotch disease, causing chlorotic leaf discoloration and premature leaf fall. As consequence the tree is physiologically weakened. The fungus appeared in organic apple production and infests scab resistant cultivars like 'Topaz', too. Up to now, no method exists to identify possible resistance donors for further breeding approaches. For this purpose different inoculation methods for a resistance test will be developed and compared. Using this method, resistant apple cultivars will be evaluated as basic material for apple resistance breeding against Marssonina coronaria. This project contributes to a reduced application of plant protection agents and an ecological, sustainable fruit production.
