Climate oriented adaptation strategies in agriculture (optimized model farm)

Project

Climate change

This project contributes to the research aim 'Climate Change'. What are the sub-aims? Take a look:
Climate change

Project code: 2810HS012
Contract period: 01.09.2010 - 30.09.2013
Budget: 564,183 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

Many studies describe a global increase in temperature and extreme weather events for the next 100 years (IPCC 2001, IPCC 2007). This phenomenon directly effects the agricultural production and farmers worldwide have to adapt. The aim of the project of FH SWF is to develop agricultural strategies on climate change for german farmers by considering two reference farms (arable farm, pig fattening farm with biogas plant) in comparison to an optimized model farm with biogas plant. Besides the development of virtual models it is necessary to get reliable data. Therefore field experiments will be carried out on two climatical different sites (Soest, high amount of rainfall; Braunschweig, low amount of rainfall) in cooperation with JKI and vTI. In the optimized model farm the amount of climate relevant gases (CO2, N2O, CH4), the use of fossil energy and mineral fertilizers will be reduced by no tillage techniques, enlargement and adaptation of crop rotation, cultivation of cover crops and the establishment of a complete nutrient cycle including a biogas plant. These adaptation strategies assist soil fertility, minimize weather caused crop failures, fix nitrogen by legumes and reduce loss of nutrients for example. The exploitation of these measurements will be made by investigation of different yield and soil parameters, environmental life cycle assessment (SALCA) and risk evaluation of the three farming systems. With the determined data economical and ecological benchmarking will be made. Results of our project will be realized by farmers, official advice and in policy.
