Development and validation of an analysis method for the selective determination of zearalenone in vegetable oils (ZENOL)

Project

Food and consumer protection

This project contributes to the research aim 'Food and consumer protection'. Which funding institutions are active for this aim? What are the sub-aims? Take a look:
Food and consumer protection

Project code: BfR-SiN-08-1335-200
Contract period: 01.02.2013 - 31.01.2015
Purpose of research: Basic research

The objective of the project is the development, optimization and validation of a HPLC-fluorescence method for the analysis of zearalenone (ZEN) in vegetable oils. The method should be suitable to control the European legal limit for ZEN in refined maize oil. A simple, rapid method for the determination of ZEN in vegetable oil is still not available. The special research project is part of the joint research project funded by the BMWi (Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Technologie) program “Transfer of results of research and development into standardisation”. The project will be carried out as a cooperative project between the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) and the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) for mycotoxins in food and feed at the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR). The project consists of five work packages (WP). Within the framework of the project the WP 4 and 5 will be carried out by the NRL. The method should be prepared for routine analysis by using a quality control scheme which is supported by statistical methods (WP4). Finally, as part of WP 5 the method will be fully validated by an interlaboratory study including national and international laboratories. Actually, a standard method is an important instrument to apply for food safety and consumer protection. Besides participation of a manufacturer with proven expertise of high-quality chromatography products the involvement of the German standardisation body (DIN) constitutes one of the principal foundations for the successful completion of this project. Furthermore, it provides a solid base to implement the method at a European/international level.
