Project code: 0313387A
Contract period: 01.05.2005 - 31.12.2008
Budget: 716,787 Euro
Purpose of research: Basic research

E. coli-Chick was established to systematically study host-pathogen interaction in E. coli resistance in chickens and to develop applications to breeding programmes. Mortality due to infection with avian pathogenic E. coli (APEC) is the major reason for economic losses in poultry industry worldwide, regardless of the production systems in use. New strategies to control APEC infections are not only urgently needed to reduce mortality rates of chickens, but also to protect consumers from food borne diseases associated with APEC. A concerted effort is made which integrates research on the molecular basis of APEC virulence with a detailed knowledge on the host innate and acquired immune response to the pathogen and the genetics of host resistance versus susceptibility and its utilisation in breeding programmes. The technology developed and knowledge gained from this work will significantly facilitate the research on other highly relevant infectious diseases relevant to the poultry industry and to consumers such as Salmonella, Chlamydia and Campylobacter infection or influenza.
