Collaborative project: Mosquito monitoring in Germany - subproject 3

Project

Project code: 2819104315
Contract period: 01.05.2015 - 30.06.2018
Budget: 437,338 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

The project deals with the recording of the geographic and seasonal occurrence of culicid species and the human and animal pathogenic disease agents they may transmit in Germany. For the assessment of the distribution of mosquitoes, special attractant-baited traps will be operated over the whole of Germany according to a given spatiotemporal pattern. In addition, mosquitoes will be collected passively by the citizen science project 'Mückenatlas'. The identification of the culicids will be performed morphologically and, if necessary, genetically. For the screening for pathogens, mosquitoes will be captured in huge numbers in floodplains and other spacious wetland areas by means of traps, aspirators and insect nets. The examination for pathogens will be performed using established PCR assays. Moreover, the introduction of invasive mosquitoes by vehicles entering Germany from southern Europe will be checked by mosquito trapping on service stations along South German motorways. Finally, the spreading tendencies of three Asian bush mosquito populations recently detected in South, West and North Germany will be examined by spatial-centrifugal sampling of potential breeding sites in the affected regions. All generated data will be fed into the German mosquito database CULBASE in order to facilitate risk analyses.
