Production processes

Project code: JKI-ÖPV-08-1352
Contract period: 01.01.2016 - 31.12.2018
Purpose of research: Applied research

The parasitoid Holepyris sylvanidis is a promising candidate for biological control which could be used in stored product protection as an alternative to classical chemical control. So far, H. sylvanidis is not commercially available and knowledge regarding its host finding behavior is still scarce. The project thus aims to investigate the following questions: 1) What are the principles of hostfinding in H. sylvanidis and what influence does habitat have on H. sylvanidis' behavior? 2) Is it possible to increase the parasitation rate in the F1 generation by conditioning of the parental generation? 3) Does the targeted release of the biological control agent in mills and bakeries lead to an efficient control of the pest populations? We will furthermore investigate the VOCs involved in host finding of H. sylvanidis and incorporated our findings into the design of lure-based traps which will a) allow for antagonist monitoring and b) help optimize antagonist rearing.
