Collaborative project: Development of allomultigerm-pills as an agrotechnical innovation to increase the desirability of slow growing crops - subproject 3

Project

Project code: 2815406110
Contract period: 01.10.2011 - 30.09.2014
Budget: 50,000 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

Allomultigermpills are a combination of a weak germinating target-species (e.g Arnica montana, Taraxacum koksaghyz) with a strong germinating nurse-species (e.g. Lupinus angustifolius, Avena sativa) in one seedpill. Technically this was realized by inclusion of both species in a watersoluble foil-film. Under controlled conditions in organic substrate the germination of the target-species within the germination-channel of the nurse-species was mostly successful. Field establishment was successful only for certain target-species (e.g. Taraxacum koksaghyz, Eragrostis tef). The characterization of a Lupinus angustifolius mutant-collection identified upright, reduced foliage, low-competetive dwarf-types as principally suited nurse-plants. Addition of mycorrhiza-inoculum to the Allomultigermpill weakened the germination of the target-species due to initial parasitic behaviour of the fungus.
