Methods to avoid stored product insects
Project
Project code: JKI-ÖPV-08-1355
Contract period: 01.01.2016
- 31.12.2018
Purpose of research: Applied research
In order to maintain product quality it is desirable if stored product pests do not find the opportunity to develop in stored plant products. In Central Europe one can assume that products are free of stored product pests at the time of harvest. This situation could be maintained by pest-proof storage conditions. The development of arthropods could also be suppressed by cooling. Reducing product moisture could inhibit pest development, as well. Hermetic storage or storage under vacuum would protect stored goods and may control pests already present. Repellent botanicals may prevent pest attack. Suitable packaging may protect goods on their way to the consumer or user. These topics are important nationally from farm to fork but also internationally in trade and in cooperation with emerging markets and agricultural countries.
