Relevance of Clostridium botulinum for the development of chronic unspecific clinical symptoms in dairy cattle - Detection of Clostridium botulinum and Clostridium botulinum Neurotoxin Within a cooperation project together with the “Tierärztliche Hochschule Hannover” (TiHo) the FLI will investigate faecal samples for the presence of C. botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) via mouse-bioassay and for C. botulinum vegetative cells or spores. The aim of this investigation is to gain knowledge regarding the hypothesis of the so called visceral botulism. The principal point of this hypothesis is the detection of BoNT in the faeces of affected animals, which is so far not proven. Furthermore the faecal samples will be investigated by PCR and real-time PCR methods for the presence of C. botulinum vegetative cells or spores by the project partner TiHo and the FLI to collect information about the prevalence of the organism and to compare the different methods. The collection of samples and their assignment to an epidemiological category is realised by the TiHo.
