Purpose of research: Applied research
Sorghum millets have a high biomass potential and are – as maize – C4-crops. Sorghum is not susceptible to the Western corn rootworm and therefore its cultivation is interesting in regions with high appearance of this pest. Sorghum originates of the subtropics and has, similar to maize about 50 years ago, a low cool tolerance, which hinders the cultivation in parts of Germany. Also, some uncertainties concerning the production technique still do exist so that the promising potential of sorghum is often not exploited in the agricultural practice.
Depending on the site-specific conditions, successful cultivars are required to offer the best possible combination of yield and quality, resulting in high methane yield per hectare.
Resulting are precise recommendations for farmers to help choosing the sorghum cultivars for their planned harvest regime. Sorghum as second crop and the usage of grain sorghum straw are also going to be evaluated.
