ProLignin – High value products from lignin side-streams of modern biorafineries

Project

Project code: 22020811
Contract period: 01.02.2012 - 31.01.2015
Budget: 235,424 Euro
Purpose of research: Basic research

The aim of Pro Lignin project is to improve the profitability of present and future biorefineries, i.e. bioethanol production plants and traditional pulp mills, by up-grading of the side-stream lignins to novel high-value products. Substitution of the oil based raw materials with the industrially available lignin residues also creates more sustainable products. As raw material will be use conventional kraft lignin, but mainly sulfur-free lignins from organosolv- and steam explosion processes. The performance of the lignins will be diversifying by chemical modification and derivatisation. The modified lignins will then be used in applications for resin, adhesives and for thermoplastic material in wood compounds.
