Efficiency and dynamics. Settlement development in times of spatially and temporally disparate trends (EUDYSÉ)

Collaborative Project

Project code: 033L009A - 033L009I
Contract period: 01.01.2011 - 28.02.2014
Coordinating institution: Leibniz Institute of Ecological and Regional Development

The project aims to identify strategies, concepts and methods for an implementation of the vision of a resource-efficient and low-emission development of settlements on the basis of two regions and contrasting regional dynamics. Depending on the historical initial situation and resulting development trajectories promising concepts to increase resource efficiency may vary, and even indicate into opposite directions. The project focuses on the built environment, land use conflicts and material flows in the subject areas energy, water, mineral resources, settlements and traffic. Situational pressure to change as well as local and regional inefficiencies serve as starting points for the search for efficient system solutions. Within the project the following thematic areas will be regarded along so called 'dissonance hypotheses' also considering predominant problems and requirements for a resource-efficient and low-emission development of settlements: Energy efficiency and renewable energies: a) integration of renewable energies into existing networks b) opportunities for a more efficient energy utilisation c) system solutions for energy crops d) biological conversion of carbon from energetic processes into methane Material flows (waste management): a) analysis of material flows of secondary resources in the building sector for an optimised recycling of building materials b) lop and urban waste as part of the municipal or regional energy supply Water management: conception/development of a more efficient water and waste water management and infrastructure, e.g. through decentralisation and concepts orienting on the material cycle Development of settlements and traffic: a) analysis of the development of settlement structure and building stock as basis for an integrated optimisation of the mentioned thematic areas b) mobility management
