Purpose of research: Applied research

1) to determine quantitative and qualitative changes in soil carbon pools following cultivation of energy crops; 2) to access the microbial biomass (Cmic) and community structure (fungi-to-bacteria ratios), as well as microbial activity (basal and specific, qCO2, respiration) under the studied cropping systems; 3) to compare selective inhibition technique (SI) and phospholipids fatty acids analysis (PLFA) used for measuring fungal and bacterial contribution to soil microbial biomass; 4) to find the main factors (soil chemical and physical properties, cropping management types) which control and constrain soil microbial properties (biomass, community structure, and activity), as well as carbon dynamics in the cropping systems under study; 5) to indicate which type of cropping systems (with/without ploughing or irrigation) provides sustainability of total soil organic carbon, or carbon fractions, as well as microbial properties of soil.
