Collaborative project: Decision support in crop protection: Pest identification using UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) technology - subproject 2 (Schadinspektor)

Project

Project code: 2815711215
Contract period: 01.07.2016 - 30.06.2019
Budget: 98,196 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

Within the scope of the project Schadinspektor we intend to develop a computer program that identifies crop pests and separates infested areas from healthy crops based on UAV (unmanned aerial vehicles) imagery. The final image analysis tool will be available via the web page www.isip.de. Two different pests causing zonal significant crop failure have been chosen for the proof of concept, one animal (common vole, Microtus arvalis) and one fungal (yellow rust, Puccinia striiformis). Both pests are suitable for the proof of concept as they are recognizable with UAV imagery on one hand and local pesticide application is ecologically and economically reasonable on the other. For the usage of the final web service on www.isip.de a farmer/extension officer will have to provide ortho-rectified UAV imagery only. The resulting pest-map output will help the farmer to optimize pesticide applications and therefore enhances a sustainable crop protection with minimized ecological and economical risks.
