Purpose of research: Applied research

The joint project BulbOmics aimed at unlocking the potential of four Hordeum bulbosum genes for their application in barley breeding. The researched genes comprised Ryd4 and Ryd5, which deliver resistance and tolerance to Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV), respectively, as well as Rym14 and Rym16, which confer resistance to Barley Yellow Mosaic Virus (BaYMV) and Barley Mild Mosaic Virus (BaMMV). Objective was to genetically map the loci and to transfer the developed molecular tools to breeding to enable the development of resistant varieties. To compensate for the reduced intergenetic recombination frequency within the region of the H. vulgare/H. bulbosum introgression, large populations with up to 29,000 individuals were used to generate high density genetic maps for the loci. Thereby, the intervals could be reduced to 67 kb (Ryd4), 1,4 Mbp (Ryd5), 2 Mbp (Rym14) and 1,2 Mbp (Rym16) of the barley reference genome. The generated molecular markers were transferred and established for routine barley breeding and, together with the traits, integrated within the breeding program.
