Development of an adaptive and multifunctional networked sensor system for the detection, localization and classification of hazards for the protection of the forest (SCHUWA)

Project

Project code: 28WB4102
Contract period: 01.02.2017 - 31.01.2019
Budget: 1,015,049 Euro
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment

Forest ecosystems are influenced by widely varying environmental factors. The forests are exposed by these factors to constant changes and are put at risk. The established forest monitoring networks observe the ecological systems throughout Europe. But they do not provide immediate risk assessment at extreme weather events and appropriate countermeasures. The current forest monitoring is focused on ecological long-term conditions, but not to prevent risks and damages. The system to be developed in the project is to detect and defense risks for the forest using existing monitoring and forecast systems. The aim of the sensor system is the supplement and im-provement of the existing monitoring networks in forestry and agriculture. Main focus is the prevention of forest fire and precaution at extreme weather events.
The project is divided into four work packages, belonging to four participating project partners. In work package 1 the specification requirements of the sensors depending of forest structure are set. Experimental sites have to be established according to these definitions. Laboratory and field tests must be done. Focus in work package 2 is the further development of the hydrogen sensor for early forest fire forecast. Work package 3 contains the selection of sensors, the development of the sensor system, the energy supply and the field test. Task of the work package 4 is the processing of measured data, including communication between the sensors and the control center. Further it also contains an alert management for hazard prevention. The system of hazard detection and prevention shall be established in cooperation with of the project partners as a demonstration area at the experi-mental station of the Thünen Institute.
