The aim of the project ProgPuc was to develop a decision support system (DSS) for the control of yellow rust and stem rust for practical wheat cultivation which can be used to reduce fungicide applications to the necessary minimum by forecasting infestations and to optimize treatment timing. An additional cultivar module allows the consideration of cultivar resistance in treatment decisions. Based on the elaborated epidemiological data concerning germination and further growth of the pathogens depending on temperature, leaf wetness, race and cultivar, parameters were quantified and a functional relationship was determined between latency and temperature or leaf wetness. The DSS predicts the different disease compartment levels. It depicts the epidemic development and the increase of disease severity for yellow and stem rust. With the implementation on the Internet platform ISIP.de, this information is initially accessible for plant protection services, but will also be available to farmers after successful validation. It contributes to address the socio-political demands to reduce the use of plant protection products while still giving farmers the opportunity to be economically successful and secure yields.
