Collaborative project: Multivariate assessment of animal welfare through integrative data acquisition and validation of animal indicators in pigs on farm level. Subproject 1 (MulTiVis)

Project

Project code: 2817905315
Contract period: 15.01.2017 - 14.03.2020
Budget: 241,578 Euro
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment
Keywords: indicators

(1) Animal welfare and animal health are described in a sufficiently large and representative cohort of pig herds. (2) Animal welfare indicators will be collected on farms and slaughterhouses. (3) Animal welfare indicators will be summarised into an overall evaluation that avoids the redundancies in the indicators (improving practicability), dependencies among the indicators will be considered (improving precision), an evaluative weighting of indicators is made, corresponding to the practical situation (avoidance distortions). With the fulfilment of these objectives, the foundations for a national Monitoring can be laid. The objectives of the project are processed in five work packages (WP). In WP 1 there is a status quo analysis of animal welfare and animal health in pig farms of the VzF. All relevant project data are transferred into a project database developed in WP 2. This data base will be accessible to all stakeholders while maintaining appropriate privacy agreements. For a description of animal welfare and animal health in WP 3 indicators are identified by means of which the development of animal welfare and animal health over time can be shown and a comprehensive monitoring of animal welfare and animal health can be ensured. In WP 4, an exemplary monitoring of the development of animal health and animal welfare is performed based on the selected indicators. Due to the extensive coordination work in the investigation, the data collection and the joint assessment, the coordination of the project is carried out in a separate WP 5. This coordination is carried out in partnership by the two project partners IBEI TiHo and MSG, in order to guarantee a sustainable basis of trust particularly in the participating farmers.
