Aim of the project is to improve the overall soybean seed value by elimination of anti-nutritional genes like soybean Agglutinin and knock-out of genes which lead to enhanced seed size (BIGSEEDS). These knock-outs will be done using Genome Editing with site directed nucleases, a new technique which does not lead automatically to a GMO. In close cooperation with the INIA from Urugay, the JKI-SB will establish soybean tissue cultures as a new method in Quedlinburg and provide the technique for sequence directed genome editing of the respectives genes to Uruguay (INIA). During the project our main focus is on the analysis of the amount of off-target-effects in Arabidopsis and soybean using genome editing. The off-target-effect analysis is extremely important for the evaluation of possible side effects occuring during genome editing which might be relevant for a risk analysis and the discussion about regulation in the future.
