Collaborative project: Broadening the genetic base and developing new (selection-) strategies for hybrid barley breeding. Subproject 1 (SpeedBarley)

Project

Project code: 2818201715
Contract period: 06.10.2016 - 31.03.2020
Purpose of research: Applied research

"Hybrid varieties make a significant contribution to improving and securing yields and quality, increasing nutrient and water use efficiency, and thus conserving natural resources in global winter barley cultivation. In SpeedBarley, the genetic width of future winter barley variety development has been extended by crosses with spring barley, thus achieving significant progress in pool formation in barley hybrid breeding. Furthermore, the spontaneous fertility restoration of the CMS mother lines is a great challenge to create successful hybrid barley varieties. Using new mapping populations flowering properties were characterised. During the investigations it was found that increased temperatures led to a higher number of viable pollen in both CMS mother lines and maintainer lines. These findings will be used sustainably for line and hybrid seed production.Totipotent cell lines of the fusion partners (Hordeum vulgare with CMS Cytoplasma) and Hordeum bulbosum could be established. The genetic and plant physiological results will sustainably strengthen the national and international winter barley variety development and thus the competitiveness of all partners."
