Project code: 28RF4029
Contract period: 04.11.2016 - 31.12.2019
Budget: 895,030 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

The project F.R.A.N.Z. (Future Resources, Agriculture & Nature Conservation) seeks to develop economically viable and practicable measures in oder to significantly increase agrobiodiversity. The measures will be implemented and tested at ten farms on a nationwide basis. This project adopts a cooperative and dialogue-based approach and implements measures which reconcile both economic and ecological interests and requirements. The defined measures will be tested on representative farms in order to guarantee that these measures can be transferred and implemented on a national scale. Moreover, the results of the implemented measures should promote further development of regulatory and publicly funded instruments within agricultural policy. Accompanying researchers will also identify barriers discouraging farmers from implementing biodiversity measures and will work out recommendations to reduce these obstacles. Policy makers will thus be presented with proven concepts in order to facilitate the achievement of federally defined goals regarding biodiversity in agricultural landscapes. These concepts should amongst others guide negotiations on the Common Agricultural Policy becoming effective after 2020. The joint project F.R.A.N.Z. is coordinated under the auspices of the Michael Otto Foundation for Environmental Protection, in cooperation with the German Farmers' Association. Both project coordinators are responsible for steering the entire project as well as for the inclusion of all participating partners. The analysis of the economic and environmental impacts of the implemented conservation measures will be carried out by the Thünen Institute of Rural Studies, Farm Economics and Biodiversity, as well as the University of Göttingen and the Michael-Otto-Institute of the NABU. The regional farmers' associations and their cultural landscape foundations will be responsible for assisting and advising the participating farms.
