Identification of barley germplasm resistant to BaMMV-SIL and a new BaMMV-strain detected in Germany and development of closely linked markers for rym13
Project
Project code: BAZ-IER-02-2365
Contract period: 01.11.2005
- 31.10.2006
Purpose of research: Basic research
Barley yellow mosaic viruses disease has become a serious threat to winter barley cultivation in Europe. In France a new strain of BaMMV (BaMMV-SIL) has been detected in 2002 which is able to overcome the resistance gene rym5. A strain similar to this has been detected in 2004 in Germany. The project aims at the identification of barley germplasm resistant to all strains of BaYMV and BaMMV present in Europe and at the comparison of the resistance reaction to BaMMV-SIL and the new German strain. These results will be the basis to ensure winter barley cultivation in the growing area of infested field. Due to the appearance of new resistance breaking strains, combining of resistance genes is of special importance. For this purpose molecular markers are essential. Respective markers will be developed for the resistance gene rym13 and a resistance derived from Shimane Omugi.
