Collaborative project: Use of genetic diversity and development of innovative tools for the genetic improvement of seed retention in forage grasses - subproject 3

Project

Project code: 2818203315
Contract period: 11.04.2017 - 10.04.2020
Budget: 125,304 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

"To improve seed retention via breeding, 3,400 individual plants from five grass species (SZS) and 13,500 genotypes from 300 ryegrass and 150 meadow fescue accessions (IPK-TEN) were evaluated for this trait. Selected material with significantly improved seed retention was integrated into the SZS breeding programme and incorporated into the IPK Genebank collection. In perennial ryegrass and meadow fescue, genotypes with a loose seed set are characterised by an abscission zone consisting of a double-row cell layer with cells only loosely connected to each other from the time of milk maturity onwards. In genotypes with a high seed retention, these cells are highly nested. In tall oat-grass, the abscission zone is much less pronounced (IPK-SZB). Bioinformatic investigations of several 100 million transcript sequences from isolated seed stems or abscission zones for SNPs and Indels as potential markers for seed retention did not yield transcripts exclusively expressed in seed retaining or loose genotypes; no chromosomal region suitable for marker development could be identified (GXP)."
