"The aim of the project was the development of a system to identify monitoring objects (e.g. single plants, traps) and to control a mobile data assessment software using transponders with near field communication (NFC). Eight different transponder types have been obtained, which underwent a primary aptitude test. It was observed that weather conditions (variation of air temperature and relative humidity, high global and UV-radiation, precipitation), design (with or without protective case) or cultivation measures (i.a. the spraying of copper compounds that left a metallic deposition on the tags) did not have any negative effect on the functional reliability of the tags. Even tags that were only of limited water resistance could be read throughout the test period without difficulty. To ensure an effective support of monitoring activities by the use of NFC tags, a number of different approaches were tested, comprising online as well as offline scenarios. As a result, the integration of the tags in the workflow of the Universal Monitoringtool of ISIP has proven to be very difficult. The following points were especially problematic: (Re)Writing the tags requires a separate app. There are apps available free of charge, which are, however, not intuitively usable without a manual At present, the app ‘Collector for ArcGIS’ from Esri Inc. used for mobile data assessment does not provide for an acceptably easy-to-use interface to utilise the data stored in the tags For these shortcomings, the practical use of NFC tags to control a mobile data assessment software is currently not feasible."
