Project code: TI-BW-08-PID1407
Contract period: 01.02.2012 - 31.01.2015
Purpose of research: Networks and research co-ordination

Pork is the most popular meat in the world. The network agri benchmark Pig analyses the profitability of pig production and determines the competitiveness at production system and farm level. Pork is produced all around the world, but the environmental, economic and political framework conditions are varying strongly between the different countries. agri benchmark wants to answer the question how the pig production, pig housing and the marketing of pigs is working under these diverse conditions? agri benchmark Pig is a tool to compare pig farms and the related business partners worldwide. By specifying typical pig farms in participating countries we will determine the competitiveness at production- system and farm level. Considering the entire value chain allows to compare the strengths and weaknesses of pig businesses across different countries. The goals of agri benchmark Pig are to understand pig production worldwide (at farm level and throughout the whole value chain, to analyse competitiveness and drivers of profitability, provide market and farm intelligence for decision-making and establish a network of pig experts around the world. To gain information about pig production it is necessary to divide the data collection into two parts. For one thing information on farm level (I) and for another thing information about the connected up- and downstream agribusiness (II) are collected. (I) Farm level Concerning the farm level, agri benchmark Pig will establish a database of typical farms and production systems in each participating country. The methods for data collection, processing and dissemination of results are standardised, unifying the work criteria of all partners. A typical farm is an existing farm or a data set describing a farm in a specific region of a country which represents a large share of output for the product considered. The typical farm runs the prevailing production system for the product considered by reflecting land and capital resources as well as the prevailing type of labour organisation. The data source can be panel of farmers (with consensus data or typified individual data), expert knowledge of agri benchmark researchers and advisors or available statistics. In order to establish and maintain a profound database, the number of required typical farms depends on the scope of the analysis, the diversity of production systems, the farm size structure, the size of the country and available financial resources. At best there will be three farms per region: - one moderate sized farm with average economic success - one large sized farm with average economic success - one large sized farm with a very good economic result This data allows covering the prevailing part of the pig production in each region. (II) The connected up- and downstream agribusiness: Due to the relatively high degree of integration in pig production, the network will also provide comparable additional information on up- and downstream agribusiness for each country’s pig production. The dataset will cover the following items: - general economic and legal situation - pattern of meat consumption - prices (weaning piglet, slaughter pig etc.) - farm structure - production (productivity, development of productivity) - marketing channels - industry structure (slaughter industry, food retailers etc.) - vertical integration - foreign trade (exports and imports)
