The aim of the project is to develop the background for recommendations in order to protect forests in times of climate change and to strengthen their ecosystem services sustainably. The impact of soil liming on carbon sequestration in forest ecosystems, soil structure, deepening of root systems, climate relevant trace gas fluxes, the hydrologic budget, foliar nutrition and on tree growth is of special importance as a consequence of deacidification. It is to proof that soil liming supports not only the deacidification of forest soils but also bioturbation, soil aggregate formation and stabilization leading to a better gas exchange that serves as a basis for the deepening of root systems. An important contribution to the adaption of forests to climate change is expected from the deepening of root systems.
