The Mak-Pak project developed a sustainable, ideally edible or even compostable packaging prototype based on macroalgae including the controlled macroalgae cultivation on a laboratory and pilot plant scale. The selection of macroalgae for the packaging material has identified suitable green, red, and brown algae strains as raw materials. The developed land-based aquaculture system on a laboratory and pilot plant scale was able to produce high quality and food-safe macroalgae biomass. Furthermore, optimized cultivation conditions led to an increase in functional ingredients. In the beta-test, the prototype with food samples was rated as good to very good by 79 - 91% of the customers. And around 88% of interviewed customers would buy the macroalgae packaging product. The industrial up-scaling to a marketable product is currently being prepared. The project was carried out by the University of Applied Sciences Bremerhaven, the Alfred Wegener Institute and the industrial partner Nordsee.
