Development of new potentials for vegetable breeding based on plant genetic resources (PGR) by on-farm conservation and marketing concepts for old vegetable varieties (ZenPGR)

Project

Project code: 2815NA179
Contract period: 01.12.2017 - 30.11.2020
Budget: 98,258 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: genetic resources, organic farming, plant genetic resources, biological diversity, vegetable production, horticulture

The project aim is to develop new potentials for vegetable breeding based on old vegetable varieties which are not available on the european seeds market anymore. The whole value chain will be included in the project and consumer preferences will be considered.
The project focus lies on plant genetic resources (PGR) which are not approved under the current Seed Marketing Act, but have been documented in historic sources. Analysis of these sources will be used to identify forgotten types of vegetable in order to broaden up the breeding spectrum of vegetables from gene bank material. Some of these old vegetable varieties will be reintroduced for cultivation and be prepared for breeding purposes.
In the project an economically viable model for on-farm conservation of old vegetable varieties will be developed. By linking up actors from the whole value chain, distribution channels for these varieties will be extended from direct marketing via farm shop or market stall to stationary food retail. For marketing support, viable means for communication will be developed and tested at the point of sale. A B2C marketing concept for old vegetable varieties will be developed.
Cooperating partners from science, vegetable breeding, on-farm conservation, cultivation, wholesale and retail contribute different kinds of competences regarding PGR and ensure a fast knowledge transfer. The project will serve as an economically sustainable model for conservation of old vegetable varieties beyond the region of Berlin and Brandenburg.
