Project code: 28RZ3IP048, 821 563, 5990
Contract period: 13.10.2017 - 30.09.2021
Budget: 1,212,120 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
Keywords: knowledge transfer, networking, precision livestock farming, animal husbandry, cattle, animal welfare, biotechnology

The project aims to strengthen already typical breed characteristics related to health and fitness traits in the German Brown Swiss breed to increase competitiveness against the dominating breeds Holstein and Fleckvieh in Germany. Beside the development of a performance recording scheme for new health traits in adult and young animals, the direct genetic characterization of breeding animals for traits like polled, genetic anomalies or milk composition will further help to improve breeding for animal welfare aspects. Data collection related to defined health, claw and calf traits will be organized in close collaboration of farmers and breeding organizations. Contracted herds will continuously deliverphenotypes and will be genotyped in parallel. This combination will allow for the development of an efficient cow based genomic evaluation systems. The resulting genomic breeding values will help farmers to improve their within herds selection and mating decisions and by the use of additional reporting tools a better management of health traits in the herds will be reached. The project supports milk and beef production in the alpine region with a clear focus on aspects like animal welfare, sustainability and a cattle breeding adapted to prevailing regional conditions. The project is based on 8 working packages (WP). WP 1 includes logistics in genotyping and data processing. WP 2 focuses on the selection of farms and the contractual commitments between breeding organization and farms for phenotyping. WP 3 covers the concept for sample collection and selection of animals. In WP 4 and 5 all activities related to practical genotyping and phenotyping are covered. WP 6 includes data processing and the development of the related breeding value estimation. AP 7 covers the routine implementation of data collection and genetic evaluation. Any activities related to networking, communication and dissemination will be done in WP 8.
