The project 'Perspective birch' stands for an image and education campaign with participation and interaction of the public. The objective is to emphasise the value of native common birch as a biodiversity promoting and climate resistant commercial tree species. In fact, the birch is an ideal partner to enhance the adaptive capacity of mixed forest stands to climate change impact - especially in the very sensitive region of the Northeast German lowlands. Together with citizen scientists we elaborate the necessary scientific input and educational contents. Moreover it relates to knowledge transfer, in order to promote ecologically-friendly behaviour patterns of everyday life, in particular, the responsible material use of timber instead of energy-intensive raw materials. The demand for high quailty timber is the driving force for an ecologically sounding and climate relevant silvicultural management. Finally, the project directly adresses our forest decision-makers, including the educational institutions involved. The focus of the project is on: (1) the establishment of a 'premium label' which defines and draws attention on the native common birch as an ecological valuable and profitable tree species, sought after because of the timber quality, on basis of open citizen science activities in the project and (2) the development and implementation of multimedia and interactive educational curricula all around a climate adapted forest management, in general, with digital available contents and a transregional range. In order to stimulate the citizen science activities a special 'Birch smartphone app' will be configured, as both, communication platform and for the self-determined data collection in the field. A further component is the interactive experience exhibition 'The lady of the forest' which is established at the forest and ecological information centre Hermann-Scheer / Eberswalde - the central contact point for citizen scientists and organised events. In addition, two target group specific education cases will be developed for the practical educational work in the forest schools.
