In an interdisciplinary approach, this consortial project on urban agriculture in southern Africa (UFiSAMo - subproject 3) will demonstrate the advantages and risks of urban agriculture in selected disadvantaged urban areas of Maputo and Cape Town. A total of seven African and German partners (Univ., KMU, NGO, GO) are working together to develop practical solutions for the safe production of food in the city. Both cities are characterised by a continuing influx of the poor rural populationwhile both have already a high degree of urbanisation. The project analyses weak points of urban agriculture along the value chain and develops proposals for solutions with city farmers, which are also the subject of capacity building measures. Cultivation structure and cultivation methods in an urban context are also being investigated, because safe food production in urban areas is often difficult due to potential exposure to heavy metals or the transmission of zoonoses by animal fertilisers. Rural farmers often have only marginal knowledge of cultivation and processing techniques. The establishment of a research and training network on urban agriculture aims to provide knowledge and to generate further research into aspects of urban agriculture. The results will not only benefit universities and academic education through publications, but will also be made accessible to small urban farmers, consumers and NGOs. Dissemination through training measures is also planned. The results will also be made available to politicians to support them in shaping the framework conditions for urban agriculture.
