Collaborative project: Regional renaissance of rye and rapeseed aiming at reducing problems in crop and animal production by reevaluation of rye constituents and their use for sustainable production in terms of environment, animal welfare and consumer protection. Subproject 2 (6-R-Konzept)

Project

Project code: 281B101116
Contract period: 01.06.2018 - 31.07.2021
Budget: 6,393 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: animal nutrition, meat, animal feed, animal health, climate (climate relevance, climate protection, climate change), feed crop production, rye, rape seed, regions, pigs

The use of rye as a robust cereal with high resistance to diseases and drought and low demands on fertilizers and pesticides, as well as rapeseed as a regional source of protein in pig feeding, offers opportunities to make modern animal nutrition concepts more climate-adapted and sustainable. The results of the project "6-R-concept" show that the use of even larger quantities of rye and rapeseed in feeding is possible without compromising performance. The unique carbohydrate and fibre composition of rye and its fermentation in the large intestine of the animals with influence on the intestinal bacterial flora open up opportunities to positively influence the intestinal health and well-being of the animals. The "6-R-concept" thus shows ways for a further development of animal nutrition in terms of animal welfare, climate adaptation and at the same time favourable effects on food safety and consumer protection.
