Collaborative project: a contribution of viticulture to the goals of the COP21-conference in Paris: sensor utilization in viticulture with minimized CO2-footprint and fungus-resistant cultivars - subproject 2 (VitiSoil)

Project

Project code: 281B302116
Contract period: 03.04.2018 - 31.08.2021
Budget: 48,812 Euro
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment
Keywords: viticulture, climate change, soil conservation, ressource pool, organic carbon, C- footprint

The project aims to evaluate and optimize the sequestration of organic carbon (C) in vineyard soils. Intensive application of sensors allows the precise evaluation of organic matter turnover and storage, of grapevine's reaction on the deep incorporation of organic matter of different quality into soil, effects on berry quality, and emission of greenhouse gases (GHG). The contribution of fungi-resistant grapevine cultivars (PIWIs) to the reduction of soil compaction and related GHG emission will be quantified. The overall results will deliver a significant contribution to a carbon footprint of wine production. The project will deliver marketing arguments for the German wine industry with respect to climate protection.
