The project aims to evaluate and optimize the sequestration of organic carbon (C) in vineyard soils. Intensive application of sensors allows the precise evaluation of organic matter turnover and storage, of grapevine's reaction on the deep incorporation of organic matter of different quality into soil, effects on berry quality, and emission of greenhouse gases (GHG). The contribution of fungi-resistant grapevine cultivars (PIWIs) to the reduction of soil compaction and related GHG emission will be quantified. The overall results deliver a significant contribution to a carbon footprint of wine production. The project will deliver marketing arguments for the German wine industry with respect to climate protection.

The project Vitisoil comprises five work packages. WP0 is a preparatory work package to establish and test innovative sensor systems. WP1 comprises a field experiment with deep incorporation of green manure, compost of selected quality, and biochar into vineyard soils of the Federal Julius Kühn Institute for grapevine breeding at Siebeldingen. Fungi-resistant grapevine cultivars will be planted afterwards. Carbon dynamics and storage, soil properties, plants reaction, berry quality and GHG emission will be monitored with sensor technologies. WP2 aims to evaluate the mentioned effects and side-effects of deep organic matter incorporation into existing vineyards. In WP3, existing old vineyards and organic matter experiments will be sampled and re-evaluated in high spatial resolution to draw a precise picture of the overall situation of organic matter sequestration in German vineyard soils in different growing areas. AP4 comprises information and knowledge transfer of growers and cooperatives.
